The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a pilot initiative that allows researchers to access anonymized data from banks across the Eurozone. The project aims to test different access methods and assess the feasibility of establishing a permanent infrastructure for research access to ECB data.
Two datasets are available: one contains balance sheet information from approximately 3.000 banks, and the other includes interest rate and business volume data from around 300 banks—both of which can be combined. The initiative seeks to support independent research, enhance cross-country economic analysis, and deepen understanding of financial dynamics in the Eurozone. Up to ten research projects will be selected, and the program's effectiveness will be evaluated after 18 months. Applications must be submitted by June 15, 2025.
